What inspired you to become a member of the Virtual Advisory Board community?
I'm at a new point in my career, having left my corporate executive role at the end of 2023. After some consulting work that I thoroughly enjoyed, I have set myself a long-term goal of taking on more work helping clients and supporting them in advisory roles. This interest stems from my diverse and varied professional experience in the pharmaceutical and life science industries. Encouraged by a VAB member's positive description of the community, I accepted her offer to support me in joining the community.
In what area do you feel board advisors can add the most value for Boards of Directors (BoDs) and executive teams?
There are some very positive aspects to bringing in external opinions when handling questions of governance. This can involve matters focused on a specific topic and/or task, where an advisor can provide a board of directors a pertinent, timely and focused service. The non-permanent aspect of the advisor role delivers agility to the board and provides for a lower-risk way to enrich discussions and the overall governance process.
What would be your dream company/organisation to work with as a board advisor/NED?
I aspire to join the board of a visionary pharmaceutical or biotech company; one seeking expertise in areas such as international business development, particularly in the out-licensing of assets. Alternatively, I am keen on contributing my skills to companies aiming to enhance their chemical portfolio through the integration of digital assets. Having immersed myself in work in both domains, I am confident I can offer a nuanced, enriched perspective on strategic approaches in these areas.
What book or podcast would you recommend to VAB members that might improve their skills in corporate governance, board advisory or boosting board-to-executive team communications?
I would recommend the following book which offers insights on how business or organisations can put in place strategies and plans to achieve growth over the longer term: Build, Borrow, or Buy: Solving the Growth Dilemma by Laurence Capron and Will Mitchell.
