Damon Hemmerdinger – Get to know our VAB member

What inspired you to become a member of the Virtual Advisory Board community?

I joined the board of Graycor Construction in 2022 and have found the experience to be very rewarding. I have enjoyed bringing my career's worth of experience to bear in helping another company make strategic decisions, and I have enjoyed the opportunity to learn more deeply about the construction management business. I am seeking to learn skills that will make me a more effective member of the Graycor board and also to find new board opportunities.


In what area do you feel board advisors can add the most value for Boards of Directors (BoDs) and executive teams?

The combination of a board advisor's outside experience with a commitment to helping a company achieve its mission is the key to an advisor's value add. My experience allows me to ask questions to executive leadership that sometimes reveals unexplored issues.


What would be your dream company/organisation to work with as a board advisor/NED?

I am very open to any board opportunity, but I think my experience makes me a great candidate for a position with a company in the real estate or construction industry, a proptech company, or a family-owned business in any sector.


What book or podcast would you recommend to VAB members that might improve their skills in corporate governance, board advisory or boosting board-to-executive team communications?

I would suggest The Power of Moments: Why Certain Experiences Have Extraordinary Impact by Chip and Dan Heath. This book touches upon a useful role a NED can play in helping executive leadership identify moments to celebrate and to build a culture around those celebrations.
