Cory R. Cox – Get to know our VAB member
What inspired you to become a member of the Virtual Advisory Board community?
I am interested in building new executive connections and would like to pay my professional experience forward. At the same time, I am interested in landing new work for my consultancy and referral practice, while also making connections that lead to board roles. Those board seats would preferably be with companies or organisations in the United States and North, Central and South America.
In the meantime, I am co-founding a new startup, AssessmentXQ, with friend and serial entrepreneur Bill Brennan. This business will enable venture capital firms, incubators or accelerators to discern which entrepreneurs will deliver outsized returns and are more optimal to invest in. I would love to engage in conversations and get intros to VAB peers in an effort to educate folks on the fact that this is happening. We are not selling until mid-2025 but we are doing education and getting feedback now.
In what area do you feel board advisors can add the most value for Boards of Directors (BoDs) and executive teams?
In counselling on how to navigate challenges based on their own experience. This optimally includes a focus on assessing risk, reducing risk and improving outcomes.
What would be your dream company/organisation to work with as a board advisor/NED?
There are a few options. I would like to sit on the board of an automotive retail dealership group, a SaaS company, or a B2B2C "channel" business with revenue of 250 million USD or more. Automotive, data, SaaS, heavy transportation, FinTech and retail are sweet spots for me.
What book or podcast would you recommend to VAB members that might improve their skills in corporate governance, board advisory or boosting board-to-executive team communications?
I would recommend The Laws of Human Nature by Robert Greene. Or for those of you seeking video content, I can recommend Ian Woodward’s Altitudes of Leadership talk that aligns with his INSEAD courses (accesible on YouTube). It’s a great quick 18-minute take on how to operate to attain success.
