We would also like to introduce you to our member Remco Majlers who joins the VAB community from the Netherlands. He currently serves in a number of advisory board roles; specifically, for Spinol Medical based in Tel Aviv and for the Bulamu Access Foundation, a not-for-profit group focused on women’s health projects in Uganda. He also serves part-time as a member of the leadership board for IntMeDa (the International Medical Devices Distributors Association). Remco is an experienced leader who loves inspiring organisational teams to work effectively and pursuing growth and expansion goals. Feel free to contact him to learn more about his board journey.

What inspired you to become a member of the Virtual Advisory Board community?

Networking is in my DNA and my interest in the VAB Community came initially through the reputation of the founders; Mark especially. My excitement continued to increase once I started to look into the events and networking opportunities the community has to offer. I joined just a couple of months ago and soon after attended my first event, which was very engaging. I look forward to continuing my journey with the VAB Community.

In what area do you feel board advisors can add the most value for Boards of Directors (BoDs) and executive teams?

A strong board of directors is a balanced group of people where everyone adds their own strength. There is not just one area. Some directors will have earned their role thanks to specific knowledge or experience while others will be part of the board due to their strong network.

Building a board means knowing what the needs of the company and its executive team are and it requires creating a governance structure with a group of individuals who have complementary strengths.

What would be your dream company/organisation to work with as a board advisor/NED?

My ambition is to join the board of a MedTech company: one that is looking for international expansion as the next step in their growth plans. I bring to the table 25 years of experience in building strategic expansion plans and implementing market launches across the globe. I would love to use this expertise to help other companies grow successfully. At this time, I am also open to joining an executive team on a more permanent basis in a company with the same ambitions.

What book or podcast would you recommend to VAB members that might improve their skills in corporate governance, board advisory or boosting board-to-executive team communications?

I would suggest The Culture Map by Erin Meyer. It’s a great roadmap for how individuals can work together successfully in the global marketplace. Beyond tips for good reads, I would close my remarks here with my favourite quote from Dutch motivational speaker Remco Claassen (loosely translated): "Create a plan for your life, otherwise you will become part of other people's plans."
